Toronto was lit with legacy.

On Friday, September 5th, brothers, actors, and producers Shamier Anderson and Stephan James hosted the 10th Annual B.L.A.C.K Ball — and trust me, it wasn’t just another TIFF after-party. It was the celebration where culture, cinema, and community collided.

For those who didn’t know, B.L.A.C.K stands for Building a Legacy in Acting, Cinema & Knowledge. For the past decade, this invite-only event has been about more than red carpets and flashbulbs. It has created a space where Black excellence in film was seen and valued. That excellence was given its flowers right here in Toronto.

The Hosts

  • Shamier Anderson (John Wick: Chapter 4, Invasion)
  • Stephan James (If Beale Street Could Talk, Homecoming)

They didn’t just host; they built bridges for the next generation of storytellers.

Who Attended?

The guest list was stacked with talent and Black Canadian excellence, including:

DJ Rennie featured in The Black Ball 25 promotional graphic for the 10th Anniversary event hosted by Shamier Anderson and Stephan James.
Music for the night was powered by DJ Rennie, and Mr Akil D who brought the soundtrack for the Black Ball’s milestone year.

Why It Matters

The B.L.A.C.K Ball wasn’t just glitz — it was purpose. It was created to give upcoming artists of color access to industry heavyweights. It opened doors that usually stayed closed. It reminded the world that Black cinema and storytelling weren’t just part of the industry — they were shaping it.

And let’s be real: ten years of holding down this space was no small feat. It was legacy work. It was archiving our presence in spaces that haven’t always made room for us.

This was one of those nights. Toronto shined on the world stage. Black brilliance was at the center. And when you saw #TheBlackBall25 trending, you knew — this was history, and Toronto was the backdrop.
