Okay Canada… let’s talk about where the money is g Okay Canada… let’s talk about where the money is going. 👀Because when I see millions of dollars attached to Black communities, Black creators and Black-led organizations, I have questions. And I want us paying attention too.Canada Media Fund - @cmf.fmc For 2026–27, CMF has made an important change to its Program for Black and Racialized Communities: while one-third of the program budget remains reserved for French-language projects, the other two-thirds can now support projects in any language other than French. That matters.Because Canadian stories don’t suddenly stop being Canadian because somebody tells them in Haitian Creole, Persian, Yoruba, Arabic, Punjabi or another language. And then there’s this:Canada’s Black Justice Strategy — $8.6 MILLIONThe federal government announced more than $8.6M over two years for 24 projects supporting Black communities across Canada. We’re talking Black youth.Victims and survivors of crime.Justice navigation.Legal education.Reintegration.Culturally responsive community services. And several of the funded organizations are right here in Ontario. Now here’s the part I always come back to:Announcements are nice. Access is better.Who received the money? What are they building with it?Who can access those programs? And most importantly — how does our community actually find out these opportunities exist BEFORE they’re over?Because I don’t want us finding out about Black-focused funding, programs and opportunities six months later in somebody’s annual report. 😩We need to know when the applications open.We need to know who qualifies. And we need to know where the damn money is going. So yes, I’m paying attention. 👀And when I find something our community should know about, I’m sharing it.
$10.16M for Black & racialized creators in Canada. $10.16M for Black & racialized creators in Canada.Filmmakers and creators, you might want to press play on this one. 🎥And yes, I found the links. 😂👇🏾 Comment “SHARE THE LINK, GIRL” and I’ll DM them to you.Save this. Send it to a creator who needs to see it.#BlackCanadianCreators #BlackCreators #CanadianFilmmakers #CreatorFunding #canadamediafund
Two Black media giants are joining forces. ESSENCE Two Black media giants are joining forces. ESSENCE Ventures has taken a minority stake in REVOLT’s parent company, bringing together audiences across ESSENCE, REVOLT, Refinery29, AFROPUNK, Beautycon and several creator-focused platforms. The goal? More collective power to compete for advertising dollars, grow distribution and strengthen Black-owned media. For Black content creators, this is worth watching. Our audiences and culture have never been “niche,” but individually, creators and smaller Black media companies don’t always have the leverage to prove that to advertisers. Partnerships like this show what can happen when Black-owned platforms connect their audiences, resources and influence. And it raises a question for us here in Canada: 🇨🇦 What could we build if Black Canadian creators and media worked together at that scale?
