Scarborough: The Power of a Community Bond Investment

What if an asset your organization already owns could help fund what you build next?

Hosted by the Afro Caribbean Business Network (ACBN), The Power of a Community Bond Investment is an invitation-only working session exploring how nonprofits and community organizations can use community bonds to raise capital, acquire long-term assets and create community wealth.

Unlike a donation or grant, a community bond allows individuals and institutions to lend money directly to an organization. The organization puts that capital to work and repays investors over time.

What you’ll learn

The session will cover:

  • What community bonds are and how they differ from grants, donations and traditional loans
  • How land, property and other organizational assets can support community-based financing
  • How nonprofits, investors and community members can work together to raise capital
  • ACBN’s Affordable Housing Project in Woodstock as a real-world example
  • Lessons ACBN is learning while developing its own community bond model

This isn’t designed as a traditional lecture. Attendees are encouraged to bring questions and think about how community financing could apply to their own organizations, projects and goals.

Creators and entrepreneurs should know about this

This conversation is especially relevant if you’re building more than content.

If you’re growing a Black-led nonprofit, creative organization, community initiative, social enterprise or other mission-driven business, understanding different ways to access capital can change how you think about funding and ownership.

Instead of asking only, “What grants can we apply for?” this session introduces another question: What could our community collectively finance and own?

Who should attend

Nonprofit leaders, community organizations and community members interested in alternative and collaborative approaches to funding mission-driven work.
