I first found (more likely she came up in my feed) Dominique Baker through the Rich Aunty identity: the fashion, the beauty, the taste for a good experience. But the deeper story is how an Ottawa creator turned a personal interest into a platform people can find, follow and return to. That is the part that belongs on your radar.
Dominique is an award-winning Canadian fashion and beauty creator based in Ottawa and the founder of Style Domination, which she launched in 2015. Her content spans fashion, beauty, travel and lifestyle. The Rich Aunty identity gives that work a memorable face, while the website gives it a home beyond the feed.
And this did not start with a grand business plan. It started with a love of style, friends who went to Ottawa events, and a suggestion from her husband: why not start a blog?

An Ottawa story found a wider audience
Dominique used Style Domination to share her personal style, beauty interests and coverage of events in her city. Posts about the grand openings of Nordstrom Ottawa and Tiffany & Co. at Rideau Centre went viral, she told SHIFTER Magazine.
That local detail matters. She was covering places and events her community could recognize. People had a reason to click beyond “here is another outfit photo.” The content had a point of view and a place attached to it. Then the audience travelled.
Dominique told SHIFTER she began to understand her reach when people recognized her while she was out in Trafalgar Square in London, in Jamaica and in New York City. In Montreal, a YouTube subscriber recognized her at a restaurant and bought her a drink. A subscriber spotted her in the wild and picked up the tab. That is a memorable measure of connection.
Dominique’s path also moved from a government job to full-time content creation. In 2019, CBC Ottawa described her as a public servant by day. By her 2022 SHIFTER interview, she identified herself as a full-time creator. That shift took more than a viral post. It took years of publishing, audience trust and work across multiple channels.

The brand has a point of view
Dominique has described her style as “classic with a trendy twist.” She favours neutrals and calls her approach classic, elevated and chic. That is a usable description, not a vague promise to post “a bit of everything.” When the personal style is clear, audiences have a better idea of what they can expect.

Style Domination connects that fashion perspective with beauty, travel and lifestyle. The categories make sense together because they reflect Dominique’s interests and how she shares them. Her about page also notes features in The Guardian, Flare, The Kit and Cityline, along with work with companies including Ford Canada, Google, Holt Renfrew, Sephora and L’Oréal.
The platform has also made room for subjects beyond style. In her introduction to Girls Living Well, Dominique wrote about wanting to address social issues, particularly the Black female experience, and give back to the community that supported her. That is part of the record too. A creator’s work can make room for more than the category that first brought an audience in.

The viral moment had somewhere to land
Here is what I keep returning to: Dominique kept the website. In her SHIFTER interview, she said, “If Instagram, YouTube and TikTok were to disappear tomorrow, I can fall back on my website which I’ve built from the ground up.”
That is an owned asset. Her website can hold the longer story, organize posts by topic and give an audience a direct place to find her work. Social platforms can help people discover a creator, but platform reach can change. A site gives the creator more control over how the work is presented and archived.
Dominique also said her blog readership had grown each year because she served her community, reviewed analytics to see what resonated and responded to what readers asked for. Useful detail, right? Analytics are not a replacement for a point of view. They help a creator see which parts of that point of view people return to.
She has described her start in practical terms too. “Just get started,” she advised in SHIFTER. You do not need a new wardrobe or expensive camera gear before you publish your first useful piece. In a CBC interview, she also spoke about pitching ideas to local publications and reaching out to public relations companies. She faced dismissive responses, kept pitching, and hired web support when she reached the point where doing it herself was taking too much time. Those are career mechanics worth noticing.
The content lesson:
Creators in Ottawa, Halifax, Calgary, or anywhere else in Canada can take practical notes from Dominique’s path. Do not copy the celebrity. Study the career mechanics.
- Make your signature recognisable. Dominique’s classic, elevated style gives the audience a clear visual thread. Choose the details that feel true to your work, then use them consistently across posts, videos and your website.
- Know who you are serving. Dominique checks her analytics and pays attention to what her readers ask for. Pick a regular time to review which topics earn meaningful reads, saves, replies or repeat visits. Use that evidence to plan the next piece.
- Give your work a home you control. Start with a simple website or another owned channel you can maintain. Add your strongest work, a short introduction and a clear way to contact you. Let social platforms point people there.
A viral post can put your name in front of new people. What you build after that moment determines whether they can find you again. Dominique’s story began with Ottawa events and personal style, then grew through years of publishing and a platform she still owns.
